LETS TALK ABOUT BEDROOMS..
We spend a third of our lives in our bedroom, it is therefore vital that this space is restful and peaceful. A sanctuary away from the stress and strain of daily living.
The bedroom is also a very personal space so there is more freedom here to be creative with colour and texture.
These are a few steps to creating the perfect bedroom, just right for you and the way you want to live..
LAYOUT
The first consideration is the space. Where is the door, where are the windows, where will the bed sit. In Feng Shui it is not advised to lay towards the door as this is considered the coffin position as you feet exit the room first.
Are there any architectural details you need to consider, a period fireplace is a beautiful feature in a bedroom or bespoke cabinetry. A window seat makes a nice focal point or an ottoman to support the bed and allows you to throw clothes down.
New houses seem to lack storage, It is important to consider wardrobes, dressing tables and drawers as clever storage is essential to a good bedroom design.
Bed side tables come in many different styles and these can be tailored to the mood and style of the space. If the bed is the focal point these should be the supporting role..
THE BED
Bigger is better when it comes to beds and if you can, always size up. When buying bedding it is also worth buying a size up so you have more duvet around the bed frame.
Space saving beds are wonderful. The space you save on the frame of the bed you can use on your mattress. The difference between a king and a super king is really noticeable.
Headboards are real focal points and can bring the space to life. Whether it is a traditional fabric headboard, rattan, bespoke or wooden, you can choose one to really suit the space and the mood you wish to create.
Mattresses come in pocket sprung, memory foam, a hybrid or memory foam with a cooling gel for added for comfort.
BED SIZES
SINGLE 92cm
SMALL DOUBLE 120cm
DOUBLE 135cm
KING 150cm
SUPER KING 180cm
FLOORING
There is no right or wrong when it comes to flooring.
Sound proofing and insulation are considerations for a good nights sleep but otherwise whether its carpet, wood or tiles is down to the design and personal preferences.
A rug underneath the bed always looks great and really anchors the bed. framing it so that the bed becomes grounded and isn’t floating around on its own. .
WINDOWS
Black out lying is a good idea if you are using fabric at the windows. Roman blinds sitting outside the frame will block light and make the windows feel bigger giving a more luxurious vibe. Full length curtains add glamour and warmth (be careful if you are interlining not to block out too much heat if your radiators sit below the windows) while shutters can be a good clean contemporary option.
LIGHTING
For a bedroom you really need task lighting (bed side tables & dressing tables) There are some amazing rechargeable wall lights now so no need for messy electricians and cables here. Try pooky or amazon for battery or rechargeable bulbs. These are also wonderful for lamps if you want to place them on a console at the back of a sofa or away from a wall.
Ambient lighting can soften the mood and can easily be achieved by adding a dimmer switch to your pendant.
Accent lighting is nice addition and would include table lamps and decorative pieces. These not only provide delicate lighting affects but they can serve as a focal point and bright the gap between furniture and the walls.
COLOUR SCHEME & FINISHING TOUCHES
Bedrooms should feel inviting and welcoming. A really nice way to add colour into a bedroom is to paint the ceiling darker than the walls this works exceptionally well if there’s a picture rail or coving.
Panelling a bedroom will bring some movement and character to a bedroom without feeling overwhelming or intrusive.
To make a small bedroom feel bigger go for a blanket of colour, seamless storage, carefully placed mirrors and use the bed as the focal point.
Adding texture with layers. pillows and throws will bring some contrast and movement with a rug underneath the bed to add some extra contrast.
Bedrooms should be comforting, inviting and warm. In order to achieve this storage is key, Reduce the clutter for a peaceful and harmonious space. Make the bed the focal point with a feature headboard and add soft lighting. Layering the furnishings with rugs, cushions and throws will bring depth to the space making it feel even more inviting.
